On November 6th, we implemented the User Interface (UI) portion of our GoPrint print management system. The GoPrint UI will change your printing process a bit, but will offer you greater flexibility and control over how you use your Print Quota. What Is the GoPrint UI?

Simply put, it is a web service that you will use to release your print jobs, check your print balance, and manage your quota. If you’ve added value to your account using the Cash2Account machine located in the Library Copy Room, you’ll be able to manage that as well.

How Will It Work?

If you are printing from an IU Kokomo computer lab or classroom, when you send a print job, the GoPrint UI will pop up automatically, presenting you a login screen. Once you are authenticated using your IU Network ID and Passphrase, you will be able to manage your printing account and release your jobs to print.

If you are working from your personal laptop, or a campus computer not located in an IU Kokomo Lab or Classroom, but still want to print to a Technology Fee sponsored printer, simply visit www.iuk.edu/cougarprint and click on ‘login.’ You will be presented with the same GoPrint UI without the automatic pop-up.

What Are the Benefits?

The benefits are many.

For years, one of our most requested features is self-service printing balance check. GoPrint has delivered that solution. Now you can manage your quota as well as your paid printing from one secure, online location.

Another benefit is the time and steps you’ll save when you print multiple documents. Imagine you are sitting down to research a topic. During your session, you find five articles that pertain to your topic of interest. Instead of having to get up from your desk five times to retrieve your print jobs, with GoPrint, your jobs don’t print until you release them. When your session is finished, simply login to GoPrint and release all of your jobs at once. Make one trip to the printer instead of five!

But let’s say that during your research, you found an article you liked, and then later found another that you like even better. With GoPrint, your jobs don’t release until you tell them to. If you sent a job that you decide you don’t want, simply mark it to be deleted instead of printed. This gives you much more control of how you spend your print quota or paid pages and reduces your overall printed pages.

The features offered in the GoPrint UI will benefit the environment and will enhance the sustainability of our campus IT operations. Informed choices will translate to better decisions when printing. Better decisions should lead to reduced costs and less paper used. Simply put, GoPrint helps us work towards a greener, smarter IT environment.
