On the Journey from Good to Great

Voluntary participation in the accreditation process with our Higher Learning Commission partners is an essential component of our campus’ continuing efforts to fulfill its mission, vision, and commitments. Central to all of these is the continuous cycle of assessment, self-reflection, change and innovation, and, once again, assessment.

The HLC self-study process allows us the opportunity to both demonstrate our successes and confront our challenges to our HLC accreditors, ourselves, and all our regional constituencies. This process compels us to critically evaluate our effectiveness in achieving our educational and service mission, providing us with benchmarks against which to measure our progress, and new insights to bring to bear on our future direction.

IU Kokomo's Goals for the Self-Study Process

Guiding Principles of IU Kokomo’s Self Study

  1. Affirm the mission, ensuring that it continues to integrate appropriately the university's strong commitment to meeting the needs of students, faculty, and staff with its equally strong commitment to the needs of the communities the campus serves;
  2. Inform, promote, and advance the Campus Strategic Plan;
  3. Demonstrate that the campus meets or exceeds the HLC criteria for reaccreditation;
  4. Identify challenges and areas for improvement, develop appropriate and timely plans and strategies, and allocate resources to address them;
  5. Demonstrate that the campus has responded appropriately to the findings of the HLC team in 1998;
  6. Celebrate IU Kokomo's tremendous successes over the years over the past decade, and ALL the people – faculty, staff, students, alumni, community constituencies – who have made them possible.
   Our self study will be:
  1. Used to Improve IU Kokomo
  2. Transparent
  3. Honest about our strengths and our weaknesses
  4. Tied to the HLC Criteria
  5. Evaluative and reflective
  6. Action oriented
    We will start immediately to fix the problems and not wait for the visit
