Humanities Degree: Theatre and Music

Can’t decide if you want to study philosophy or English, theatre or communication? How about studying them all? If learning to express yourself while discussing and debating life's big questions sounds intriguing to you, a degree in humanities with an emphasis on performing arts allows you to study a range of subjects including theatre and music. At Indiana University Kokomo, we’ve designed the humanities degree for you – the student interested in several different fields and how they relate to one another.

Within the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, you can choose to focus your studies, deepen your expertise, and pad your resume by choosing a concentration, adding a minor, or participating in our variety of student organizations.

Bachelor of Arts in Humanities

Students who complete a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities will be prepared to pursue a special interest in one or more subjects within the humanities and explore the relationships between various subjects. Students will also be able to continue studies and embark on graduate or professional study, or develop analytical and expressive skills to use in any number of careers.

Because the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities includes only a few required courses, students are free to select advanced courses that reflect personal or professional interests. it’s important to work closely with an academic advisor to create a plan of study to complete the degree requirements.

Humanities Concentrations

Whether you are an actor, singer, or musician, your talents and skills are a deep-rooted passion. If you eat, sleep, and breathe theatre or music, IU Kokomo has a vibrant theatre and music scene. Whether you liken yourself to Miles Davis, Joan Sutherland, or Meryl Streep, we have a variety of student organizations, workshops, classes, and performances happening throughout the year to showcase your talents and abilities. Our lively music and theatre department offers a 31-credit-hour performing arts concentration in either specialty. In this concentration, you can focus on either music or theatre:

Performing Arts - Music Focus

In the music classroom, topics range from music theory to violin to the history of rock 'n' roll. Students can take applied lessons in piano, voice, guitar, trumpet, low brass, percussion, and other instruments. The performing arts concentration with a music focus culminates in a 1-credit-hour capstone project. Students can become a part of the Cougar Choir, the jazz band, the concert band, and the orchestra. Additionally, we offer select music scholarships!

Performing Arts - Theatre Focus

In the theatre classroom, topics range from an introduction to acting to Shakespeare to directing. Students may find their place in the limelight in the musicals and plays performed every year. The performing arts concentration with a theatre focus culminates in a 1-credit-hour capstone project. Students can get involved with the Drama Club and the SumAntics, IU Kokomo’s student improv group.

With an emphasis on learning and practicing the art of performance, students in the performing arts concentration will work with our talented and experienced faculty. For a more detailed listing of the courses we offer in music and theatre, visit our academic bulletin.
